Chapter Six

My joys are immortal,

I stand on the mount!

While Cherry and Garrett took a much needed nap, Rhoda, Gage, and Carla unpacked the rest of the boxes and found all of Cara’s books. Rhoda was concerned they wouldn’t find a place to put the books, but when she voiced her concern, Carla piped up, “Uncle Cole has a whole library full of books.”

Rhoda glanced at her in surprise. “He does?”

Carla nodded and stood up. “I’ll show you.”

She led Rhoda down a hallway and into a door across from the downstairs bedrooms. As she stepped into the room, the smell of books hit her nose and Rhoda breathed in deeply. Her jaw dropped open when she saw the room. Shelves lined all four walls, except where there were two window seats. In the window seats, were a couple of books stacked neatly. The shelves were almost completely full. She had known Cole, and his father before him, were wealthy and learned, but this library surprised and pleased her.

Rhoda took another step inside and walked around the room, running her finger along the spines of the books, skimming the titles as she walked and muttering them to herself. “Theology books, books on raising cattle, agriculture, Shakespeare, Dickens. He has just about every well-known author in here and some I’ve never heard of before.”

Rhoda turned to Carla and Gage. “Let’s get those books in here and on these shelves. All except Little Women.”

The two children grinned and raced back to the living room. Rhoda followed at a slower pace. Would she ever stop being surprised by this man? Probably not, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to stop being surprised by him.

It took a little less than an hour to find where to put each of the books, but when they were done, they felt satisfied that their job was complete.

His owner pushed him into a gallop toward the far pasture, stopping twice to talk to a couple of men on the way there. When they reached the pasture, his owner must have decided the tour was done because he pulled on the reins to head back to the barn. Thunder trotted back toward the barn, picking up on Cole’s excitement. He didn’t know what his owner was thinking, but he knew when he got back to the barn, there would be oats for him to eat. He’d enjoyed his now-rare ride, but oats were so delicious after a long day carrying a man, who was still damp, on his back.

Thunder whinnied as he thought about the last part of the ride. Cole had started out dripping wet and slowly dried off as they galloped toward the end of the property. He would never understand his owner’s obsession with immersing himself in water. Wasn’t drinking it enough?

The barn was in sight. Thunder restrained himself and kept at the speed Cole wanted him to go. He wanted to go faster, but would listen to his master. He trotted into the corral and waited impatiently for Cole to dismount and take all the contraptions off.
